One of the many possibilities….
11 items ….Hence .99 x 11 = 10.89 so…..
89 is the contribution of paise part and rupee part is 10
33 – 10 = 23 is the Rupee part of final payment
Now let us presume that there are four items costing……
1.99 each
2.99 each
3.99 each
4.99 each
I purchase
3 of item 1 3 x 1 = 3
5 of item 2 5 x 2 = 10
2 of item 3 2 x 3 = 6
1 of item 4 1 x 4 = 4
That total no. of items is 11 and their rupee part is 23.
Rate …. x Rs y Ps.
Whatever be the item bought, x part will always be greater than 1. Hence it cannot contribute to ps. Part.
Hence only ‘y’ can contribute to Ps. Part. As all items have THE SAME ps part ( 99 p) ; it does not matter how many items of each type are bought.
Hence, total no. of items can ONLY be 11. No other alternative satisfies final bill ending with 89 ps.
